PHILADELPHIA -

A new revolutionary procedure at the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia aims to treat people who suffer from Vitreomacular Adhesion, otherwise known as VMA.

VMA affects the central vision of nearly a quarter of a million people in the United States.

Doctors at Wills Eye Institute in Center City are using a new drug, Jetrea, to treat the ailment.

The new drug works as an injection that goes directly into the eye.

Although it sounds painful, doctors say it's really not.

A patient who received the shot tells FOX 29's Joyce Evans the hardest part was the anticipation leading up to the procedure.

Doctors say the injection eliminates the need for surgery and cuts down on recovery time.

If you suffer from VMA, doctors say it's worth asking your doctor about the new procedure.

You can learn more about Jetrea and the treatment on the Wills Eye Institute website.
