NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Snow, sleet and rain slowed the morning commute across the tristate region and caused some schools to delay opening and others to cancel classes for the day.

A moderate winter storm produced significant snow for only parts of the area.

A Winter Weather Advisory was issued for Sussex, Warren, Morris, Hunterdon, Ocean, Passaic and Somerset counties in New Jersey; Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester counties in New York.

A Winter Storm Watch was issued for Ocean County.

The National Weather Service forecasted as much as six inches of snow in New Jersey's higher elevations before changing to freezing rain.

An area of low pressure passing by to the south pulled ample moisture into the region with a significant amount of cold air.

Temperatures hovering near or around freezing will give the region mixed precipitation especially throughout the coastal areas and New York City.

Farther north, temperatures are just below freezing and therefore most of the precipitation is falling as snow.

Daytime highs will only be in the mid to upper 30s.
