Illinois home foreclosure activity rose 32.6% in 2012 compared to the previous year. But it was almost 10% lower than in 2010.
A report released Thursday by Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac shows Illinois with 136,603 foreclosure filings last year. That represents a rate of 1 in every 39 housing units, or 2.58% of all homes. It's the fifth-highest rate in the nation.
Filings include default notices, auction-sale notices and bank repossessions.
Florida had the nation's highest foreclosure rate - one in every 32 housing units. Other states with foreclosure rates worse than Illinois were Nevada, Arizona and Georgia.
Nationally, last year's foreclosure activity fell almost 3% from 2011. That was 36% lower than in 2010.
