Kids march in solidarity on Friday before Martin Luther King day

Posted: Updated:

Martin Luther King Day is on Monday, but students at one valley school district got a jump on honoring MLK. The entire school district had a parade in his honor.

"It really is good that they're coming together and want to do something to show people, oh we are working together," says Francine Hines.

"He made everybody come together as one instead of the world being separate," says Andrew Ross.

Andrew Ross and about a thousand other students marched to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The parade is held on the Friday before the Martin Luther King Junior holiday. It's a nearly 3 decade tradition for the Roosevelt School District in Phoenix.

"It's very important cause I think sometimes we lose focus you know, on how far we came and to where we are today," says Kenji Dunlap.

"They need to know that Martin Luther King paved the way for them, that this day was set aside for them in order for them to reunite together no matter what color they are," says Hines.

Hines was out with the children watching the others march in a small parade. She lives nearby and comes out every year.

She enjoys watching the children, like Andrew Ross, walk in solidarity. He is inspired too.

"By letting everybody know about Martin Luther King and keep this parade going."

All the students who marched were elementary school children, kindergarten through 8th grade.
