CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Just how windy was it Saturday night? According to the National Weather Service, winds throughout the Chicago area approached 50 mph in many spots, and in a few places even exceeded 60 mph.
The highest recorded wind Saturday night was a marine reading of 71 mph at 10:45 p.m. in Michigan City, Ind., according to the weather service.
Some of the other highest wind speeds throughout the area late Saturday, recorded generally between 10 and 11 p.m., included:
• 59 mph at the Harrison-Dever Crib;
• 54 mph in Palatine;
• 53 mph at the Aurora Municipal Airport;
• 50 mph in Rosemont;
• 47 mph at O'Hare, Palwaukee and DuPage airports.
• 47 mph at Navy Pier.
The winds brought along arctic cold, and the coldest temperatures of the season in the Chicago area.
Low temperatures Sunday night will be in the single digits across the Chicago metropolitan area, with wind chills of 10 to 20 degrees below zero expected.
High temperatures will likely remain in the single digits over north central Illinois Monday and Tuesday, the weather service said. Even the high temperature on Monday will just be between 8 to 12 degrees, according to the weather service. The high temperatures will be about the same on Tuesday, with the lowest wind chill readings 15 to 25 degrees below zero possible in the morning. Low temperatures Tuesday night will be 4 to 8 degrees above zero.
Temperatures will warm up, relatively speaking, Wednesday, with highs expected around 20 degrees.
The "good news" tough is that with the exception of a 30 or 40 percent chance of light snow showers Thursday and Friday, the weather service does not foresee any significant snowfall in the Chicago area through the coming week.
