No injuries reported in town home blaze

Posted: Updated:

Six families have been forced from their homes after a fire ripped through a Phoenix apartment complex, located near 40th Street just south of the Loop 202.

Some those families had to rush out of their apartments. They didn't even have time to grab their shoes.

Video shows flames shooting out of the roof of the Palazzo Townhomes about 10 p.m. Sunday. Firefighters rushed to keep the fire from spreading. These units are stacked closely together.

"It was very scary actually, I was in my room with the windows open watching TV and I kept on smelling incense, I thought wow that's really strong," says resident Jane Rios.

Jane Rios lives right next door to the apartment unit where the fire started. Jane's apartment is one of three with major damage. She ran outside and couldn't get back in to rescue her cats.

Luckily the cats are safe, later found hiding under a bed.

"Very disturbing, this has never happened, I don't know what… I've never been in this situation before."

Right now firefighters haven't told us what started the fire. It was so intense, the entire roof burned off.

"I feel horrible for the people whose place it was," says witness Molly Fuzac.

Molly Fuzac will be displaced for a few days. Her apartment didn't have fire damage but it has smoke damage. Professional cleaners will be brought in.

"We're trying to get food that's still good, pack up all our stuff for the next few days," says Fuzac.

A sprinkler system helped keep the blaze from getting worse. No one was hurt.

The apartment complex is helping the families out with temporary housing until they can move back in.
