Thousands march in remembrance of MLK

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds of folks hit the streets of downtown Phoenix Monday to march in memory of Martin Luther King Junior.

We spoke with those marchers as they traveled from a central Phoenix church to Margaret T. Hance Park.

Marchers walked in unity – boys, girls, and adults of all nationalities in memory of Martin Luther King Junior.

"This is my first opportunity in 45 years to be in a march for Martin Luther King."

"This is awesome. I've been living in Arizona the last 23 years. I've always wanted to do something like this and today I got the courage to come out and do it," said Sarah Accardi.

Marchers, escorted by police, shut down city streets to allow those honoring the holiday to walk together.

"What you're hearing right there, overcoming racism, making sure everyone is equal," said Larry Weig.

The thousand or so marchers left Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church in downtown Phoenix and walked several miles to Margaret T. Hance Park.

"It's about coming together. It's about unity and about everybody coming together, one creed one race," said Natalie Saumalu.

At the park, families gathered to spend the day reflecting on the past and honoring a legacy.

The city of Mesa held their own MLK celebration, honoring the civil rights leader at the Mesa Arts Center.
