Hamilton HS students in attendance at inauguration

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C. -

More than 30 students from a Chandler high school are in Washington for the inauguration. The students raised money and planned the trip for close to a year.

The students are from a civics class at Hamilton High School. They started planning this trip before they knew who won the election.

Somewhere in that huge crowd of people are these students from an American studies class at Hamilton.

We talked to them a few days before they left.

"It is exciting, this is the last time Obama will ever be inaugurated. It is a story to tell, it is something you can tell your kids," says Zak Ghali.

The 35 students raised $1,600 for the trip. In addition to watching the inauguration on the national mall, the group also planned to spend a few days seeing the sights in our nation's capital.

This is a picture from student Paula Beatty's Facebook page.

"I think it is important to be involved in politics at a young age. So when you grow up and vote you can have your say in politics. This is our country," says Paula Beatty.

"It is probably going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity, once I become an adult my life is going to be hectic and I will not get the opportunity again," says Nithin Rahkumar.

The students' trip is expected to last four days.
