Charlie Neth and Sophath Khmeth walked up to a crime scene and got devastating news. A loved one had been shot trying to stop a robbery.
"What he did was the right thing. He tried to save somebody's life and then he got his own jeopardized," said Neth.
Police say just before 6pm Monday a masked man with a gun tried to rob Koh Kong Grocery Store on the 2200 block of south 7th Street in south Philadelphia. The victim, a regular customer, tried to stop the robbery and protect store workers but the gunman fired two shots at him. The man was shot in the head and leg.
"He's a very generous guy and he's a very friendly guy," said Neth. Khmeth, the victim's cousin, says he saw the suspect and a lookout guy running away from the store.
"If I knew it was him he would've got tackled," said Khmeth.
The victim is lucky he survived. Police say the bullet didn't penetrate his skull.
"The crime scene has a large amount of blood inside the grocery store so the face that he's in stable condition is hard to believe," said Chief Inspector Scott Small.
Police have not released the victim's name yet nor have they released surveillance video from a camera across the street from the store. They say it captured the suspects running out of the store. The victim is recovering at the hospital.
