Former Synagro executive James Rosendall came off last week smelling as bad as the city sludge his company wanted to haul. Prosecutors started the day trying to spruce him up. In the end, it seemed to end up a wash.
"I think the government had some points to make. I think we had some points to make, and I think it was an interesting exchange," said Bernard Kilpatrick attorney John Shea.
The debate is over Bernard Kilpatrick's role in a billion-dollar city deal. Prosecutors say he threatened to shut it down if he didn't get paid. Defense attorneys say he was merely earning a living.
Rosendall testified that if the deal went through, the mayor's dad could have shared in a $3.8-million payday.
But it was the former mayor's high living that ended the day. In the year 2000, the non-profit Kilpatrick Civic Fund paid $2,000 to help the future mayor lease a Deville.
"At the time didn't even realize what it was and again that was 13 years ago," said former Cadillac salesman Doug Dalgleish.
Prosecutors say the payment was an improper use of the fund. Defense attorneys are likely to agree with Dalgleish's take on the matter.
"I don't know enough about the proper use of civic fund checks to remark on that."
After his release from jail in 2009, Kilpatrick went back to Dalgleish, driving away with a 2009 Cadillac Escalade. His attorney, Jim Thomas, says there's nothing improper about that transaction, which was funded, in part, by Kilpatrick's mother.
There's nothing illegal about a mother helping her son lease an Escalade, but you get the sense prosecutors just want to drive home once again Kilpatrick liked to live very, very large.
