Wing Shortage Has Restaurant Calling 'Fowl'

PHILADELPHIA -

At Chick-A-Licious in Center City, they fry up  golden fried goodness. But a possible chicken wing shortage has manager Ben Wang gobbling up what he can -- before prices go up.

"There's  a shortage out there, we're actually stocking up wings right now."

The National Chicken Council reporting demand for wings this year is at an all time high--just in time for the Super Bowl.

But here's the problem-- fewer chickens produced-- because of increased feed costs from last summer's drought.

That made wholesale wing prices take flight  to a record high, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

$2.11 here in the Northeast. Up 12 percent from last year.

That has the manager at Smith's calling "fowl."

Especially since the Super Bowl--one of the sports bar's busiest wing selling days of the year, is right around the corner.

"It's a terrible  shame, but as we said, we won't make the customers suffer we'll take the hit. "

Thursday weather looks damp and stormy.  It will be mild and muggy to start with spotty showers early followed by afternoon and evening storms.  Highs in the upper 70s with winds out of the SW 5-10 mph. Some of the storms will produce locally heavy rain and gusty winds.

This system is from the same cold front that caused the midwest tornadoes. It will also usher in cooler air for the holiday weekend.
