Chicago’s 1” snowless streak ends

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago officially received its first daily 1" snowfall of the season on Friday, January 25th with O'Hare picking 1.1" of snow. The streak finally comes to end at 335 days without receiving 1" of snow on a calendar day. This crushed the previous record of 319 days set back on January 6th, 1940.

Chicago also set a record for the greatest number of days without a snow depth of 1" or greater. That record also ended on January 25th at 333 days.

So far this season Chicago has received only 2.8" of snow compared to 12.9" through time last year.

The forecast for the remainder of the month looks very mild and wet with little chance for measurable snowfall. The least amount of total snowfall through January 31st is 3.6" back in the 1943-44 winter season. That season still produced a total snowfall of 24.0" of snow with 12.5" in February and 7.9" in March. So there's still hope for somewhat of a snowy end to our winter.

Check out the forecast for precipitation totals over the next 5 days.

For the second straight winter, Chicago has enjoyed a fairly mild winter. The coldest overnight low last winter was only 5 degrees. That's incredibly unusual since Chicago, sees on average, 13 days each winter where the temperature drops below zero.

This winter hasn't been much different. Chicago saw its first subzero temperature in 710 days on January 22nd where the mercury dipped to -1. That's a stretch of 711 days. The odd thing about getting below zero on January 22nd was that there was no snow on the ground.

Since 1960, Chicago has seen 474 days with a low temperature below zero. Only 17 days occurred with no snow on the ground. That just goes to show you how much of an impact snow pack has on surface temperatures.

The long range forecast for February calls for temperatures, on average, to be cooler than normal with near normal precipitation. Based on this forecast, one would expect more of a snowy month compared to rainy.
