Neighbor Saves Woman From Wissinoming Fire

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

William Martinez relived  the early morning fire that torched his neighbors Wissinoming home and had her crying for help.

"I  was taking a shower and heard alarms go off," said Martinez. I  jumped up because I smelled  smoke and heard alarms at same time."

Martinez saved Marie Mattis from the burning home at 2029 Anchor. While she was safe outside Martinez raced back in, braving smoke and flames to try and rescue her ex-husband Walter.

"I  kept yelling fall to the floor so I can grab you. I  tried to get wet towels  to put on face but flames started going into the  building and I could hardly see."

Martinez was  forced to retreat because of the smoke and flames.

Thankfully firefighters arrived quickly.

They rescued Walter from his second story bedroom.

He was severely burned and barely alive.

"I'm really upset my husbands burnt and they don't think he's making it," said Marie.

Mattis thankful to her neighbor who risked his life--her gratitude summed up in the way she describes him with these three words. "Angel,  life saver."
