East Lake Street apartment fire claims life of elderly tenant

Posted: Updated:

A small apartment fire along East Lake Street in south Minneapolis took the life of an elderly tenant.

The fire was called in around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. It didn't look like much from the street, but we learned later that the elderly man who lived in the second-floor unit died in the fire.

The building is the former home of the Roundup Beer Hall, right at the junction of East Lake Street and Interstate 35W. The pub has been closed for sometime, but the signage is a familiar sight, right across the street from McDonald's.

Fire crews said the smoke and fire was contained to the one apartment, where an 85-year-old man lived alone.

Another tenant of the building was with her son on the floor above when they realized something was terribly wrong.

"He went in the hallway and he said, mom there's smoke out there, call 911, quick, quick, quick," said Pam Boyd, who lives on the third floor.

Boyd and her son made it out safely.

Minneapolis police and fire departments are investigating the death, though they stressed there appears to be nothing suspicious about it.
