Home Depot volunteers help out couple needing remodel

Posted: Updated:

A valley couple with some physical challenges is having trouble getting around the house or doing any repairs -- but they're getting a big gift today.

Volunteers are giving this couple a home makeover.

More than a dozen volunteers from Home Depot spent this week remodeling an elderly couple's home.

"They were on a fixed income and unable to do these repairs themselves," says Caroline Kelsall, Support Dept. Supervisor at Home Depot.

It's not always easy for Armand Laratta and his wife to get around the house. They have a few physical challenges. But this makeover should make life a little easier.

"It's amazing it's amazing that things like that could happen," says Armand Laratta. "It's going to be a big help."

The remodel will make the home safer for Armand and his wife. Plus there's a new shower that's easier for them to step into.

"I had problems stepping over the tub and everything very dangerous... putting a shower in there, it's easy."

In addition to renovating the bathroom, crews are busy installing new counter tops and remodeling the entire kitchen.

"Everything was really bad before, we didn't have a stove a couple years, now I'll be able to cook again in it."

New appliances are now replacing the empty spots in the kitchen. And a lot of yard work and spring cleaning brighten up the entire home.

It's thanks in part to a grant through the non-profit group "Angels On-Call."

"We've been able to give them a remodeled bathroom and kitchen and were doing some yard work and painting," says Kelsall.

"They're doing a great job, I'm loving every bit of it," says Laratta.

Just a couple hours ago, Home Depot volunteers discovered a big problem at the house -- a gas leak.

It could've caused a massive problem there.

Southwest Gas came out and shut the gas line down this afternoon. A natural gas company will now re-pipe the house for free to give the couple a helping hand.
