NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A water main ruptured Friday at Broadway and East 23rd Street in Manhattan, impacted subway service.

The break at about 10:45 a.m. caused extensive flooding in the area. Photos and video from the scene show water gushing into the East 23rd Street Subway Station and flowing into the area of the Flatiron public plaza.

Fifth Avenue was closed between 34th Street and 23rd Street Portions of the street buckled from the water.

The Office of Emergency Management said the 36-inch wide pipe was installed in 1915.

Surrounding buildings could experience low water pressure.

There were reports of water service disrupted as far away as lower Manhattan.

Crews were on the scene in the Flatiron repairing the damage on Friday.
