From helmet to hairnet: Mike Lodish now makes peanut brittle

He's been to more Super Bowls than any player in NFL history.  Now Mike Lodish is starting a new chapter in his life.

"I love food and I love my family and my mom's peanut brittle is outstanding," he said.  "We've talked about it as a family to bring it out to introduce to everybody because everybody that tries it basically says how can we get more of it."

"It's been a family favorite for over 40 years.  So Mike decided that he wanted to take the challenge on, and he did, and I gave him the recipe," said Pat Lodish, Mike's mom.

On September 1, 2011, Lodish's Champion Brittle hit the shelves in metro Detroit, and no surprise the former defensive tackle isn't afraid to get his hands dirty.

"It's kind of fun for me because where I was this athlete and defensive lineman, now I'm in the confectionary business.  It's kind of like a polarized type of deal.  I wear an apron, and it's kind of funny.  I wear a hair net," said Lodish.

He may have traded in his helmet for a hairnet, but Lodish uses the same no nonsense approach he used in football to make his brittle, relying on his team at JLM Manufacturing in Warren and plenty of hard work.

"When you look at him, you'd think he'd be a bull in a china shop, but no, he's got baker's hands.  He behaves very well, and he's very good at what he's doing," said Spiro Liras, manufacturing director for JLM.

He spent five seasons in Buffalo playing for the Bills and then six more in Denver where he won two championship rings with the Broncos, but when Lodish decided to enter this new phase of his life, there was no doubt in his mind where he wanted to do it.

"I wanted to keep everything in Michigan.  The made in Michigan concept... is really hot and really big, and the ingredients that we chose to emulate my mom's recipe are gluten free," he said.

The five basic ingredients of his peanut crunch on right on the label along with his pledge -- all vegan, all natural, and 100 percent gluten free.

But don't expect the grizzled veteran to give up the preparation of his peanut crunch.  He guards that like a Super Bowl game plan.

"Failure is not an option for Mike.  It never has been.  He's always been an extremely hard worker and an overachiever, always, his whole life," his mother said.

"The next flavor that we're going to come out with is this product but with drizzled chocolate," said Lodish.
