Mina, the 13 year old black lab is a military legend. Along with Sgt. Corey McCourt, the pair did three tours of duty in Afghanistan. Mina detected the bombs and Sgt. McCourt disabled the blast. Mina retired and died of a lung infection. Sgt. McCourt requested Mina be buried at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly. But, the Pentagon advised that all national military cemeteries by federal law are for people only. Mina, promoted to Sgt. and given an honorary discharge from the US Army was still not permitted in the cemetery.
The story went viral online and people worldwide wanted to help find a home for Mina's remains. A Marine Corp Viet Nam veteran from Oakland County was moved. Michael Zehnder, who also directs the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office is paying for a head stone, cremation and a service - teaming up with the Michigan War Dog Memorial Cemetery in Lyon Township. Mina's paw prints were formed in a plaster impression and he was wrapped in the American Flag for cremation and then finally placed in a pine box draped with a flag.
