CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
One firefighter was hurt battling an extra-alarm blaze at an abandoned New City factory that made parade floats Monday night on the South Side.
The fire started at 5:39 p.m. in an abandoned factory at 4834 S. Halsted St. and was quickly elevated to a two-alarm blaze, according to Fire Media Affairs. The building is set back at least 200 feet from the street.
One firefighter was injured and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the fire department said.
The building was "fire resistant" and the blaze was contained in about 45 minutes, according to the fire department. The fire was extinguished about 6:55 p.m., according to reports.
Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said the abandoned building used to make parade floats and there was a bunch of burning debris inside.
The fire is about two miles southeast of a five-alarm fire gutted a vacant warehouse Jan. 24. It took more than 170 firefighters to extinguish that blaze, which was caused by an open flame.
The cause of Monday's fire was not immediately available.
