NYC: No plans for casino in Willets Point

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - New York City says it has no plans for a casino near Citi Field if the state approves full-scale gambling.

The city last year reached an agreement with a group of developers to develop a blighted portion of Willets Point in Queens.

It calls for Related Companies and Sterling Equities to construct a mix of retail, hotel and commercial space in a gritty area made up of auto repair shops and junkyards. Affordable housing units also would be constructed.

The city on Tuesday put an end to speculation about a casino being a part of the development.

A City Hall spokeswoman told The New York Times "there is no casino being built at Willet Point, period."

Officials also said current zoning would not allow a casino on the site.
