TEMPE, Ariz. -
Curious as to why the "A" on Tempe's "A Mountain" was painted purple Wednesday? It's not a prank -- purple is the color of pancreas cancer awareness.
ASU professor Sidney Bacon, 57, has pancreas cancer. He is a 1-year survivor and is undergoing treatment at Scottsdale Healthcare's Virginia G.
Piper Cancer Center Clinical Trials.
Bacon's students paid tribute to his battle with cancer by painting the "A" purple. They also lined his route to Scottsdale Healthcare with signs of encouragement for his trip to get treatment.
Scottsdale Healthcare's study shows 59 percent improvement in 1-year survival rates and the 2-year survival rate has doubled.
Purple is also the color of Scottsdale Healthcare.
