Arizona man's child porn conviction tossed

Updated:

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A federal appeals court has thrown out the conviction of an Arizona man for bringing child pornography into Mississippi.

Gregory Edward Vernon of Florence, Ariz., was sentenced to 33 years in 2012 in U.S. District Court in Oxford, Miss.

Vernon was arrested by U.S. marshals at a Tunica, Miss., casino on a 2006 warrant from Arizona.

Authorities searched Vernon's car and found a computer prosecutors said contained images and movies of child pornography. A search of the car was conducted by Tunica County deputies while marshals watched.

A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says the search did not comply with U.S. Marshal Service policy and what was found should not have been used as evidence against Vernon.
