SEDONA, Ariz. -
There were rain showers and snowfall across Arizona on Monday. It surprised many people who were visiting the state, expecting to see sunshine.
ADOT has hundreds of cameras throughout the valley and Tucson, keeping an eye on the roadways and highways. They have a way to watch what's going on up north as well.
Dave and Ruth Million stopped at a scenic overlook outside Sedona to take in the view. The North Carolina residents are surprised to see snow.
"We were looking for sun, not what we've got in North Carolina," says Dave Million.
"We arrived to sunshine Friday and then woke up Saturday morning to nice fluffy snowman-building snow, it was beautiful," says Ruth.
Signs along the I-17 alerted motorists that highway 89A between Sedona and Flagstaff was closed early Monday due to heavy snow and ice.
"It freaked us out when we saw the electric sign that said ‘winter storm warning,' some road between Sedona and Flagstaff is closed, and I thought oh my god we're not going to be able to see anything," says Jeff Buchanan, visiting from Indiana.
This group visiting from Indiana missed the worst of it -- but still wasn't prepared for the cold.
"This is the heaviest jacket that I brought. So it is cold in Indiana. We just don't have the snow, we're kind of used to it," says Lanita Buchanan.
There's good news for those enjoying this winter weather. The National Weather Service is calling for more snow Monday night. Two to 4 more inches could fall in higher elevations.
"Oh it was just wonderful, I got very excited because it's been a long time since I saw snow," says Chris Benoist.
The Department Of Transportation had nearly 80 snowplows working to clear Arizona highways and is ready for more -- just like this couple staying the night up north.
"We might have hit it on one of the best days to take pictures," says Mike Benoist.
In the valley Monday morning, rain came down, just enough to keep the roads and sidewalks damp. A few snowflakes even fell in north Scottsdale and Cave Creek.
"I actually didn't think I was going to find snow, I just wanted to drive around in the rain, just get out of the house a little bit and I found snow instead," says Spencer Peters.
Phoenix will begin warming on Wednesday and rebound to near or above average.
