Sky Head Coach/GM Pokey Chatman signs extension

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO, February 12, 2013 — The Chicago Sky today announced the team has signed head coach and general manager Pokey Chatman to a multi-year contract extension. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released. The Sky also announced the team has re-signed Christie Sides and Jeff House as assistant coaches.

"We are thrilled to announce a contract extension with one of the league's finest and most dynamic coaches," said Sky president and CEO Adam Fox. "We brought Pokey to Chicago two years ago because she has had both a track record of winning at every level and a passion for connecting with basketball fans of all ages. In the short time she's been with our franchise, we have seen dramatic changes to the level of play and the popularity of the team. The ability to maintain continuity of our coaching staff bodes well for the 2013 season and beyond."

Under Pokey's leadership, the Sky finished the 2011 and 2012 seasons with identical records of 14-20, narrowly missing the playoffs in each case. Her 28 career wins is second most in Sky history.

In the 2012 season, the Sky got off to a hot start at 7-1 before several key injuries changed the direction of the team. Despite this fact, the Sky set franchise marks in numerous categories including a six-game winning streak, a 22-point comeback at Atlanta on June 2, and a 29-point victory over in Phoenix on September 16.

"I am truly appreciative of Michael's commitment to this franchise, and confidence in my ability to lead it to great heights. The enthusiasm of our growing fan base, combined with our core of returning players, and my love for the windy city, leaves me excited for the challenges we will face."

Chatman came to the Sky from three years of coaching professional women's basketball in Russia and 15 years on the coaching staff at LSU, her alma mater. As head coach of Russian Spartak Moscow Region in 2010, Chatman led the team to a perfect 16-0 record in the EuroLeague and claimed the EuroLeague Championship.

Chatman was the head coach of the LSU Lady Tigers for three seasons from 2003 to 2006, with a coaching record of 90-14. She went a remarkable 47-3 in her first 50 games as head coach, the second best starting record in women's basketball history.  She took the Tigers to three consecutive finishes in the Final Four. For her work in her first full season as a head coach, she was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Coach of the Year, Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, Naismith National Coach of the Year and the Victor Award Female Coach of the Year.
