CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A teenage parolee has been charged with leading police on a chase in a stolen vehicle that left three officers injured early Wednesday on the South Side.

Grand Crossing District patrol officers saw Eric Samuels, 17, driving a black 2001 Dodge Intrepid with a taillight out in the 400 block of East 69th Street and stopped the car about 2:25 a.m., according to a statement from police.

When the officers approached the car, they noticed the ignition area was stripped and a screwdriver was sticking out of the ignition lock, police said.

Samuels, of the 600 block of East 131st, then sped away and the officers gave chase, then and called for backup, police said.

During the pursuit, the police car crashed into a building, News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Three officers were injured in the crash -- one suffered a broken wrist, nose and ankle; another a cut to the left leg, and a third minor injuries to the neck, back and leg, police said.

The officers were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Other officers stopped the car in the 500 block of East 74th Street, but Samuels attempted to run away, police said. Officers chased him down and found he was concealing a gun in his hand under a jacket.

The officers were able to disarm Samuels after a struggle and take him into custody, police said.

Samuels was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet and was also wanted for a parole violation from February 2012 gun charges, police said.

The officers recovered a loaded 9 mm handgun with a defaced serial number, police said. They also found two fully-loaded 15-round magazines and 38 additional 9 mm rounds.

Samuels was charged with three counts of felony aggravated fleeing and one count each of felony possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was also charged with one misdemeanor count of aggravated assault on a police officer, and issued a ticket for driving with broken/inoperable lamps.

He is expected to appear in bond court on Thursday.
