Superstorm Sandy

Storm-destroyed boardwalk turned into art

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Superstorm Sandy destroyed the famed Long Beach, Long Island, boardwalk. More than three months after the storm hit, all that remains of the histori landmark are the concrete stanchions.

You probably see a giant mess in the rubble and debris. But artist Maureen Cronin sees art. She sees visions of angels, sunflowers, seascapes and more. She turned devastation into motivation to use the splintered, destroyed wood from the boardwalk to create art.

Cronin was displaced by Sandy herself. The hurricane also swallowed up all of Cronin's art work and supplies. New materials were sent to her from an unlikely group of people: members of Cronin's old college sorority, some whom she had never even met.

They sent care packages including an art kit with brushes.

She posted a Facebook page called Boardwalk Angels and says that she has already completed 200 unique pieces of art and has at least 40 more requests on order. She and a partner created all this while working full-time jobs.

Her labor of love is far stronger than any devastation and destruction Sandy ever could've whipped up.
