U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-4th) and a candidate for the Cicero town president's job, Juan Ochoa, called on Monday for an investigation of alleged voter intimidation in the western suburb.
Gutierrez and Ochoa, who is challenging Town President Larry Dominick, called on Cook County Clerk David Orr and State's Attorney Anita Alvarez to investigate allegations of Dominick supporters of trying to "intimidate" Latino voters in the suburb's Feb. 26 election.
"We need to see you. You need to come here to Cicero....Come here and protect the voters against this infamy of corruption." said Gutierrez, who is backing Ochoa in the primary on Feb. 26.
Orr's employees have been especially active in the town in recent weeks, and Orr is expected to address the issue of pre-election shenanigans at a news conference this afternoon.
Gutierrez and Ochoa allege that Cicero community service workers have questioned and tried to intimidate voters who had requested mail-in ballots. The voters allegedly were told that voting by mail is illegal and that they would be committing fraud.
"Larry Dominick has used public resources to intimidate and suppress the Latino vote," Ochoa said. "This despicable act against our democracy is not to be tolerated."
Dominick, through a spokesman, has denied any wrongdoing, and his campaign has alleged that Ochoa's campaign has used gang members as campaign workers.
