Connecticut's Senate on Wednesday approved sweeping new restrictions on weapons and large-capacity magazines, a response to last year's deadly Newtown elementary school shooting that would give the state some of the country's tightest gun control laws.

A Democratic gun control package supported by Vice President Joe Biden has quickly moved through the state legislature in Colorado, prompting heated debates on both sides of the political aisle.
The four gun bills passed by the House over the weekend included a ban on magazines that hold more than 15 rounds, a gun tax on all purchases, a ban on private sale of firearms and instituting universal background checks. All were passed during a day-long marathon session in the state legislature.
Vice President Biden did call some Democratic representatives in more moderate districts, encouraging their vote in favor.
Those on both sides have strong opinions.
"That is the common thread we see in these massacres. They're using these high-capacity magazines so they can unload as many bullets as they can to kill as many people as they can, in our schools, in our theaters and in our church," said Democratic Rep. Rhonda Fields.
Republican Rep. Mark Waller said, "Members, you vote for this bill, you're not voting for an evidence-based practice; you're voting on a hunch, you're voting on a guess, and you're willing to send jobs, important manufacturing jobs out of this state."
The possible ban on the magazines is prompting the state's largest ammunition manufacturer Magpul to threaten to leave Colorado if they do become law and the measure does ban high capacity magazines.
"A little over 200 jobs right here at our assembly, shipping and design as well as our headquarters facility and probably another 400 or even more at our suppliers, sub-contractors and service providers throughout Colorado," said Magpul's Director of Product Management, Duane Liptak, Jr.
Final action on all four measures are expected in the Colorado State House and already both sides are being lobbied hard by those in favor and against the measures.
