GREEN OAK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -
There was an eerie scene outside an Green Oak Township home Monday night. Michigan State Police and Livingston County Sheriff's deputies combed through the house and a car searching for evidence.
Police said it all started a little after 4:00 p.m. with the report of a break-in at a home just a few miles away.
"There was a Green Oak officer and an MSP officer nearby. They observed the vehicle from the description of the burglary. It was a home burglary," said Green Oak Township Police Chief Robert Brookins.
Police said the suspect took off and led officers on a chase that ended at his mother's home.
"There were some shots exchanged in the driveway of the home, and the suspect that was... being chased was pursued into the home. There was an exchange of gunfire in the home between the suspect and officers," Brookins explained.
When the smoke cleared, the suspect was dead. No one else was inside the house at the time, and police are not releasing much information about the suspect. What we do know is that the suspect is a 31-year-old man who had a lengthy criminal rap sheet.
"We've spoken to the family of the victim and obviously we're sorry for the circumstances in how it concluded," said Michigan State Police 1st Lieutenant Joel Allen.
The state trooper and the Green Oak Township police officer involved in this shooting were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. I'm told those injuries were not gunshot wounds and they are expected to be just fine. Meanwhile, the investigation continues.
