Teacher includes questions about slavery in math homework

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A class of nine-year-olds at P.S. 59 in Manhattan reportedly received a hand out from a teacher with math problems that included questions about the killing and beating of slaves.

A student teacher noticed the questions before they could be given to a second class, reported the NY Post.

One of the questions read: "One slave got whipped five times a day. How many times did he get whipped in a month (31 days)?"

Another subtraction question said: "In a slave ship, there can be 3,799 slaves. One day, the slaves took over the ship. 1,897 are dead. How many slaves are alive?"

The Post identified the teacher responsible for creating the questions as Jane Youn.

It was a clumsy attempt by the teacher to combine history and math, the Dept. of Education told the Post.

The same worksheet was nearly handed out to students in another class while the teacher was on vacation, according to the Post.

Both teachers face disciplinary action.
