Panama Canal project causes concern around eastern ports

The Port authority says it plans to raise the Bayonne Bridge by more than 60 feet to allow ship coming from Asia through a widened Panama Canal.

The project has some residents in the area concerned that the move could harm the environment. They say more trucks offloading huge ships could lead to increased diesel pollution.

According to the Coast Guard, their preliminary assessment found the project won't have significant environmental or health effects.

Residents in Newark and on Staten Island say they want the agency to conduct a full environmental review.
