NEW YORK -

It's a day of remembrance here in the U.S. marking 20 years after al Qaeda first struck the World Trade Center in 1993.

The terrorist attack killed six people and injured more than 1,000 others in downtown Manhattan.

A moment of silence was observed Tuesday at 12:18 p.m., the time when the truck bomb was detonated below the north tower.

The ceremony held at the 9/11 Memorial honored the more than 2,700 people who died in the 2001 terrorist attack at the World Trade Center.

Family members embraced as a procession of honor guards passed through. The names of those lost too soon were read aloud.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Mayor David Dinkins also attended the ceremony.

The six Islamic extremists responsible for the heinous act were all convicted of carrying out the bombing, including mastermind Ramzi Yousef.
