SANFORD, Fl. -

Tuesday marked one year since Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida.

The volunteer, George Zimmerman, claims he shot the teen in self-defense in accordance with the sate's "Stand Your Ground Law."

Residents who live around the area where the shooting happened say race relations have improved in the last year.

The shooting ignited a nationwide debate on gun control, race relations and "stand your ground" laws.

Supporters of Martin held a "Million Hoodie March" in his memory Tuesday evening in New York.
