Tips for choosing your child's summer camp

Posted: Updated:

Summer will be here before you know it, so it's time to think about what your kids will do to pass the time.  Summer camps are already starting to fill up, and Atlanta Parent Magazine says if you're planning to send your kids to camp, now's the time to get moving!

With thousands of summer camps available across the nation, it might be hard to decide which one is right for your child.  Julie Bookman, editor of Atlanta Parent Magazine, says the process can be overwhelming.  From sports camps to arts camps to drama camps, there's something for every child.   Did you know you can even send your child to etiquette camp to work on their manners?

Bookman says if you're trying to pick a camp for your child, narrow down your top choices and then, ask lots of questions.  You'll need to know where it's located, what the setting is, and who else will be there, among other things.

You should also make sure your child is ready to go—especially if the camp is an overnight one.  Bookman says you should tour the facility if possible, and if your child hasn't spent much time away from home, a camp that offers a mini overnight session for two to three nights at a time might be the best option for you.

Because there are so many camps available to choose from, Atlanta Parent Magazine has resources to help you.  They'll host an expo on March 16 at Perimeter Mall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and more than 40 camps will be represented.

Does your summer road trip include mouth-watering stops at mom-and-pop eateries?  Ours does, and it'll be even better with the help of a new Southern Living book!
Off the Eaten Path: Second Helpings is dedicated to finding the best meals in the south-- and it features some great restaurants right here in north Georgia.  Good Day's Paul Milliken checked out two of those gems-- The Hil in Serenbe, and Weaver D's in Athens!  As usual, he didn't leave hungry.
