Cardinals from around the world gathered at the Vatican Monday to begin the process of selecting a new pope.
The cardinals were swarmed by members of the media before the meetings began as they entered the Vatican.
Once inside, the pre-conclave meetings started with a prayer along with an oath of secrecy.
The election of the new pontiff is already surrounded by controversy after Britain's top Roman Catholic cleric Cardinal Keith O'Brien stepped down last week amid allegations he engaged in sexual misconduct, FOX News reports.
O'Brien announced he would not participate in the upcoming conclave.
Among other responsibilities, the cardinals are tasked with setting a date for the conclave during the pre-conclave meetings.
