WASHINGTON, D.C. (FOX News) -
A Senate Judiciary Committee will consider a new gun trafficking bill in Washington Tuesday, that was introduced by a bipartisan group of senators including Democrat Dick Durbin and Republican Mark Kirk.
The bill would crack down on gun trafficking and straw purchasing. They named the bill after Hadiya Pendelton, the King College Prep student who was fatally shot shortly after performing at President Obama's inaugural festivities.
Also called the Stop Illegal Trafficking in Firearms Act of 2013, the bill combines legislation Durbin and U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy introduced to crack down on those buying guns legally and sell the weapons to those who can't legally own them - and anti-gun trafficking legislation Kirk and New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand previously introduced.
Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins is also a sponsor.
Durbin said the bill would create the first specific prohibitions in federal law to deter straw purchasing or gun trafficking.
Chicago congressman Luis Gutierrez will also introduce a new handgun law Tuesday on Capitol Hill. The measure would curb the sale and trafficking of cheap guns.
