Police: Device Found At Lawnside Borough Hall A Hoax

Posted: Updated:
LAWNSIDE, N.J. -

A device found inside the Lawnside Borough Hall that was thought to be explosive was just a pair of flares taped to two pipes, Camden County investigators said.

The device was discovered in a bag placed inside of an elevator in the borough hall Thursday morning by an employee arriving for work.

The hoax prompted Camden County Bomb Squad members to clear the building. A bomb squad robot was able to determine the device did not have any explosives, but instead was filled with screws. Investigators say the flares taped to the device would not have ignited.

The bag which the device was found in, had the name of borough Mayor Mary Ann Wardlow written on it, but it's still not clear who left it, the Camden County prosecutor's office said.

Investigators say the bag was not in the elevator at the time the mayor left the building Wednesday night.

If you have any information, you're asked to call the Camden County Prosecutor's Office at 609-381-4940.
