Report: undercover TSA agent passes security with 'bomb'

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

An inspector for the agency responsible for safeguarding air travel in the U.S. reportedly managed to get a fake bomb through two security screenings at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The breach took place Feb. 25, according to the NY Post.

The TSA agent was part of a four person team who posing as ticketed passengers and passed through the B1 checkpoint of Terminal B.

It is not clear what the fake bomb was made of.

The TSA agent reportedly carried the 'bomb' in his pants.

Only one member of the 'terror team' was stopped.  A female agent was carrying an 'improved explosive device' inside a child's doll, sources told the Post.

Security lapses at Newark Liberty have been documented in the past.

In October 2012, an internal report obtained by the Newark Star-Ledger, showed screeners were properly executing standard pat-downs of passengers only 17 percent of the time.

The report also stated that proper action was taken on prohibited items in only 25 percent of all cases.

The TSA issued a statement about its operations but did not specifically confirm or deny the incident.

"As part of TSA's efforts to enhance the efficiency of screenings operations, TSA regularly conducts covert testing of its security layers, creating the most difficult and isolated training scenarios to ensure officers are able to detect even the most difficult to find devices," the agency said in the statement. "TSA officers are provided with immediate on-the-spot feedback so that they gain the maximum training value that the drills offer. Due to the security-sensitive nature of the tests, TSA does not publicly share details about how they are conducted, what specifically is tested or the outcomes."
