Northern Illinois University's president says an FBI search of the campus police station this week focused on police department electronic and paper records dating back to 2005.
John Peters' Friday statement doesn't offer other details about the investigation centered on the police office at the heart of the 25,000-student campus. Wednesday's search lasted for more than eight hours.
Peters added that the investigation is causing "distress" and makes it "a particularly uncertain time" for the DeKalb-based school.
The FBI raid came weeks after a former NIU police officer was indicted on sexual assault charges and the department's police chief was fired.
The FBI would only say search warrants were executed in "an ongoing criminal investigation" involving state police, the Department of Education and the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
