SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -
Former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is back behind bars. After 14 days of deliberations, a jury convicted him on 24 of 30 counts, including racketeering, bribery and extortion.
"Kwame Kilpatrick didn't lead the city, he looted the city," said U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade after the verdict.
"We cannot argue with the fact that they spent a great deal of time deliberating, that it appears as if they were methodical in going through the evidence," said Kilpatrick attorney Jim Thomas. "There seems to be some logic to what it is that they did, although I don't agree with it."
Kilpatrick is not alone. His longtime friend and contractor Bobby Ferguson was also convicted and ordered to prison.
"Any time you put your heart and soul into something and you come up short, it's an empty feeling," said Ferguson attorney Mike Rataj.
Kilpatrick's father, Bernard, was also found guilty, but he is free for now.
