When It Comes To The New Pope, What's In A Name?

When it comes to the next leader of the Catholic church, history, respect and honor are all considered when selecting a name for the next pope.

The pope actually selects his own name with something that indicates the kind of pope he will be.

Benedict XVI chose his name in honor of two popes; Benedict XV, known as the prophet of peace who guided the church through times of war and St. Benedict of Nursia, whose life evoked the Christian roots of Europe and whom he said he hoped would guide him and others to a deeper commitment to their Catholic roots.

St. Benedict of Nursia took the name of his immediate predecessor, who died after 33 short days

John Paul II was the first to ever take a dual name to honor his two predecessors, who elevated him to bishop and cardinal within the church.

Of the 265 popes, only 43 names were used only once: Eusebius, Agatho, Romanus and Hilarius are among that short list.

So, will the next pope pick one of those?

While little is certain, one thing is almost guaranteed, the new pontiff is unlikely to name himself Peter II.

The name Peter II, the first pope, has never been considered.

FOX 29 and myfoxphilly.com will bring you full coverage of the selection of the next pope. Our Ian Page will be reporting from Rome all week and we'll take you behind the scenes and cover all of the angles of selecting the new pope.
