Monica Conyers working at Metrotech Collision in Corktown

She is out of prison. Now Monica Conyers, the former president of the Detroit City Council, has a new job, and it's not in politics.
Conyers is one of the many once powerful to fall in the federal government's wide-ranging public corruption probe.
Released from "Camp Cupcake" in West Virginia, Conyers is now working in Detroit at Metrotech Collision on Michigan Avenue in Corktown.
"First she was in a halfway house. She applied for the job. We checked her resume. She had good credentials. We hired her," said Sam Hussein. "She's been here for about two months now."
Hussein said he wasn't concerned about her past and the conviction for shaking people down while in office.
Conyers went to prison in September of 2010, and was just released in December to a halfway house and required to find employment, so Hussein hired her to work in his office.
"To me, she's paid her debt to society. Everybody deserves a second chance. Everybody makes mistakes," Hussein said. "To me, she's put all that stuff behind her and right now just trying to move forward, and we're not here to judge her on her past. So we're here to just make sure that she's doing her job as long as she's working for us."
Hussein told us Conyers works at the front desk answering phones and dealing with insurance claims. It's administrative work, and she puts in about 30 hours a week.
We tried to talk to Conyers, but she asked us to leave. We were escorted out of the business, but her boss said she is doing a great job.
"She's been at work on time every day, so no complaints whatsoever," said Hussein. "She's doing a great job at work and taking care of business."
