A fire burned through a three-story building in Port Washington, Long Island, Thursday, destroying or damaging several apartments and small businesses, police said.
The fire broke out at 1 Herbert Avenue at the corner of Main Street at about 1:20 p.m., authorities said. Cops had to shut down a big stretch of Main Street.
Several fire departments responded. The strong wind made fighting the flames very hard, police said.
First responders evacuated the building. No one was reported hurt, police said, but several families have been displaced.
