PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) -

She is accused of murdering her own grandson. Sandra Layne returned to the stand Thursday, and the judge and jury saw a very different side of the West Bloomfield grandmother.

"You shoot your grandson one time, yes?" Layne was asked.

"I don't know," she responded.

"Shoot him two times?" she was questioned.

"I don't know," she said.

"Shoot him three times?" she was further asked.

"I don't know," she said again.

It was an uphill battle for the prosecution. Layne seemed confused and struggled to answer questions about the events leading up to the death of her grandson, Jonathan Hoffman.

"You see blood, yes?" she was asked.

"I can't answer that," she said.

The prosecutor grilled Layne about not leaving the house when she had the chance and not calling police after she fired the first shot.

The day Hoffman died, Layne and her grandson fought about the drug test he had just failed. The 17-year-old had violated his probation by testing positive for K2. Layne said her grandson went into a violent rage.

"He kicked me, and he hit me," said testified.

"Where's he hit you?" she was asked.

"Fist to the head," she said. "And then I shot the gun."

"Why did you shoot the gun?" she was further questioned.

"Because he was attacking me," she said.

"Did that ever happen before?" she was asked.

"No," she said.

"Did you want to hurt him?" she was asked.

"No," she said.

Thursday, the jury told the judge they had questions for Layne. She faced them to answer.

"How did there come to be shots in the master bedroom and the kitchen along with Jonathan's blood? Were you chasing him or was he chasing you?" a juror asked.

"It's terrible, but I don't remember being in those rooms and what exactly happened. I don't know," Layne said.
