A new SEPTA Silverliner sits on the tracks Wednesday during a ceremony.
PHILADELPHIA -
SEPTA and United Transit Systems came together Wednesday to celebrate what officials called a new step forward in Philadelphia transit.
The two organizations held a ceremony to commemorate the final production of 120 new Silverliner V rail cars, which will begin to replace older-model cars on Philadelphia's regional rail.
The celebration also recognized the economic boost the production brought to the area.
The car order provided 250 jobs at the manufacturing facility alone, plus created many other types of jobs for contracting the order and assisting the process to this final point, officials said.
The joint effort invested millions of dollars in the region; the cars were completely assembled and tested in Philadelphia and many parts were made by Pennsylvania-based suppliers.
