Police: Teens Carjack Elderly Woman, Lock Her In Trunk Of Car

Delaware State Police say they have arrested five teenagers in connection to the abduction of an 89-year-old woman forced into the trunk of her own car and left there for two days.

The teenagers are as young as 14 and no older than 17.

The police investigation started Tuesday when troopers met with a relative of the victim who reported her missing.

Police have identified the victim as Margaret Smith.

Relatives grew concerned when a neighbor reported seeing Smith get into her car and leave her home.

A day later on Wednesday morning, police were called to a cemetery on Calvary Road on the report of an elderly woman seen wandering around graves. Police say they identified the woman as Smith, and reported she seemed confused.

Later that evening, investigators met with Smith, who was able to recall being approached on Monday by two girls at the Chicken Man convenience store in Milford. Police say the two girls asked for a ride and Smith agreed. But when they arrived at a home in Lincoln, police say the two girls demanded that Smith give them the keys. The girls managed to get the keys from Smith during a struggle and then forced her into the trunk of her car and drove off, investigators said.

At one point, police say the girls took $500 from her coat pocket.

After two days, Smith was dropped off at the cemetery.

Police say as Smith was recalling what happened to her, troopers in Bridgeville pulled over her car in a routine traffic stop. Five teenagers, including the two girls accused of locking her in her trunk, were inside at the time of the stop.

The five teens all face various charges related to the abduction.
