GILA BEND, Ariz. -
Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies say they seized about 4,000 pounds of marijuana Thursday in Vekol Valley, near Interstate 8.
Deputies say two, possibly stolen, half-ton pickup trucks were so stuffed with marijuana bundles that it was coming out of their open windows. They also found backpacks stuffed with marijuana.
An MCSO helicopter found the abandoned trucks after their occupants tried to hide them with camouflage tarps and cacti.
Deputies made the discovery after a two-day investigation of the high traffic area.
In addition, nine people were taken into custody on Thursday after deputies pulled over an SUV for speeding.
Four of the people were booked into jail on charges of human smuggling. The remaining five people, including two juveniles, were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for border violations.
The suspects are from El Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico and were headed to Oregon and Nevada.
