Volunteers turn vacant lot into community space

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

Volunteers are doing their part to keep Phoenix looking good. It's all part of the "Phoenix Beautiful Corporate Challenge."

More than 100 University Of Phoenix and Apollo Group volunteers took part.

They put together planting beds, picnic tables, benches and gazebos at a vacant lot in Phoenix.

"We're at the core of the city, we're in communities where we need to revitalize all these vacant lots and we need to do it in a way that's sustainable and brings health and wellness to the community. But it's something that the community needs as well," says Melissa Antone, University Of Phoenix.

The project is part of the larger city-led initiative known as PHX Renews.
