PERFECT SEASON: Gopher women win 2nd consecutive national championship

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

History was made on the ice on Sunday when the Gopher women's hockey team finished off their perfect season in front of a sold-out home crowd and took home their second national title in a row.

According to some fans who spoke with FOX 9 News, scalpers on the street were asking between $100 and $200 per last-minute ticket. Yet, even those who couldn't get inside Ridder Arena to see the championship game said they soaked up every Gopher goal.

"I can see the big screen," said Elizabeth Palmen, who watched the game with a friend inside the lobby. "That's fun -- still get to hear the crowd."

The crowd certainly had a lot to cheer about while the Gophers hammered Boston University 6-3 to cap off an undefeated, 41-0 season -- the first of its kind in the history of women's hockey.

"The girls played great," said Bill McKinney. "What more could you want?"

Even the state of hockey's No. 1 fan got caught up in the euphoria of back-to-back titles.

"It's unbelievable! No ties. I mean, just the incredible way they play," Gov. Mark Dayton said. "They way they played as a team and rallied, rose to the occasion every time they were challenged."

Including the end of last season, the team has now won 49 consecutive games.

The only downer of the day is that more fans didn't have the opportunity to watch history unfold because there was no local television broadcast of the championship. Some fans felt that was a lack of respect for the women's team, but FOX 9 News was told a contractual obligation between the NCAA and their online streaming partner -- which had purchased the rights to the Frozen Four -- was the cause.
