DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit Police Officer Geoffrey Townsend was once featured on Fox 2 News during the summer of 2011. The focus that day was the life of the 45-year-old philanthropist and his non-profit youth organization called Reality Check Detroit.

"I wanted other children to avoid some of the pitfalls that I went through so that's actually why I started the program," says Townsend.

When this crusader for kids is not fighting crime out of DPD's 8th precinct, he is on a mission to help put troubled children on the right path. The program's web site suggests that Reality Check Detroit's 12-week process is geared toward young people ages 6 to 14.  The goal is to keep juveniles out of jail so the mentors and volunteers work on their academics, social and behavioral skills, as well as their self esteem.

"Once you help one child, he or she is going go help another child and the domino effect continues," says Townsend.

And once the 12-week course is complete, Townsend and team don't just walk away.  They monitor the progress of every youngster on their road to success.  But for Townsend walking that road, alongside the children, could soon come to an end. In the early evening on Tuesday, this cop was pulled over by Farmington Hills Police at Orchard Lake and I-696.

Investigators tell FOX 2, a warrant had been signed and Townsend was arrested on the spot, locked up and later charged in 47th District Court with four counts of criminal sexual conduct in the 3rd degree. Startling accusations which include penetration of a minor between the ages of 13 to 15.  Police say the counts are linked to a 13-year-old girl who Townsend met through his youth program.

The criminal acts are alleged to have taken place between October of 2010 and August of 2012 inside Townsend's Farmington Hills home.  Fox 2 has learned that the victim's mother recently found out about the alleged inappropriate and criminal behavior and quickly alerted the authorities.

Right now, Townsend is in the Oakland County jail, held on $25,000 bond. Although the charges are very serious and disturbing, Townsend is innocent until proven guilty.
